The Diesel operated Firearm ...

Well not exactly a pure diesel gun but it does demonstrate the diesel effect.

Take any old spring piston air rifle, cock the barrel, insert your favorite pellet and add about 1/2 drop of any fine oil (sewing machine oil is best, 3-in-1 oil works too) behind the pellet. Close and fire.

As the piston travels down the cylinder it generates heat of compression, this ignites the oil behind the pellet and fuel combustion propels the pellet down the barrel at hyper velocity. It sounds like a 22 round with a distinctive supersonic crack and muzzle flash/smoke from combustion.

Smells like my old VW Rabbit.

Its hard on the main spring and seals so you might not want to use your expensive Diana RWS rifle ...

how accurate was it at the higher velocity?

Re: The Diesel operated Firearm ...

Pretty good group with the lighter round nosed Crosman Premier out to 35 yards (1.5 " group) , but the pointed Beeman pellets spun off wild beyond 20 yards or so .... way too much velocity for the tiny projectile. Up close they're devastating, zipping thru 1/2 plywood like butter at 10 yards.

Not a big advantage to hunting tree rats or jack rabbit when you already have a 1000 fps springer but it gives the cheapo low power air rifles one hell of a kick in the pants.

Neat trick!

Sounds like something out of the old Jolly Roger cookbook.

I'm gonna give it a try. :D

I remember something about this being illegal in England so it might work.

Believe it or not the U.K. has a 12 foot pound energy limit on AIRGUNS ..... :haha:
